Your customers are already on WhatsApp. The question is how your business should use it. Meta offers two options: the free WhatsApp Business app and the WhatsApp Business Platform, usually called the WhatsApp Business API. They serve very different needs.
The WhatsApp Business app
The app is a free download for small businesses. You get a business profile, catalogue, quick replies and labels.
It works well when:
- One or two people handle all chats
- Message volumes are low
- You do not need to connect WhatsApp to other software
Its limits: it runs on a phone (plus a few linked devices), cannot send automated messages from your software and cannot scale to a large team.
The WhatsApp Business Platform (API)
The API connects WhatsApp to your systems. Instead of typing every message by hand, your software sends and receives messages automatically.
What it makes possible:
- Automated notifications: order confirmations, invoices, delivery updates, appointment reminders and OTPs
- Team inbox: many agents answer from one number on their computers
- Chatbots: answer common questions instantly, 24×7
- Integrations: with your CRM, ERP, billing software or website
- Broadcasts to opted-in customers using approved message templates
Key rules to know
- Opt-in: customers must agree to receive messages from you.
- Templates: messages you start (outside a customer's 24-hour reply window) must use templates approved by Meta.
- Customer service window: when a customer messages you, you can reply freely for 24 hours.
- Pricing: Meta charges for certain template messages by category (marketing, utility, authentication). Check Meta's current rate card for India, as prices change.
- Quality rating: messages people block or report lower your rating and sending limits, so send only useful, expected messages.

Frequently asked questions
Can I keep my existing number?
Yes, but a number registered on the API cannot be used in the normal WhatsApp or WhatsApp Business app at the same time. Many businesses use a new number for the API.
Do I get the green tick?
The verified badge is granted by Meta to notable brands. Business verification is a separate, required step that we help you complete.
